I've had this problem with my MacBook, almost since I got it, where it refuses to eject CDs from the drive. The drive starts making squirmy eject noises and then the tip of the CD pushes against the thin fuzzy lining of the slot ... before suddenly stopping and injecting itself back into the drive. It seems that metal case along the top of the CD drive opening is bent ever so slightly, which the disk just hits on its way out.
To eject a disk I have to use something thin and stiff, such as a business card or a clothing tag, and shove it into the slot right as the disk is coming out. The idea is that the card forms a ramp, deflecting the disk away from whatever its getting caught on.
Of course, timing is critical (too soon and you'll force the disk back in yourself) and if I miss the window the disk catches and auto-injects back into the computer. I then have to wait 5-10 seconds while it is remounted until I can try again.
If its not obvious, this is extremely aggravating.
Last night I was installing an update via CD while eating left over pizza. At the end of the process I steeled myself to eject the disk. I hit the button but the shim I'd chosen was too flimsy (I believe it was a glossy advertising mailer) and the disk shot back into the computer.
Enraged on IPA and pizza grease I lost it. I shoved the flat end of my fork just into the slot where the case bends slightly down and twisted it like a screwdriver, hard, swearing
"Goddammit you will be wide enough!"
In physics, you learn no matter how hard or how long you strain at, say, pushing a brick wall, that your efforts can't be described as work because the wall hasn't moved. My effort seemed similarly doomed to triviality except that on closer inspection, amidst scrapes and gouges, the opening did seem slightly wider.
I hit the eject button...sweet sliding success! My disk was free!
I put it back in and ejected it a few more times to make sure it wasn't a fluke. To my delight, I could now eject disks from my computer at will and without scouring the room for excess card stock. To think that all this time, I only needed to stick a fork in it!
